Decided to look into the marketing
aspects of two different athletics teams from two different sports. Both of the teams that I looked into play
football/futbol, but they are not the same sports. Football is known all throughout North
America has a grueling sport where people hit each other with pads on to score
touchdowns and beat the other team.
While futbol is know throughout the entire world, but big in Europe,
where teams use their feet to kick around a ball to score it into the opponents
goals.
These two sports connect to two
different types of people and I thought it would be interesting to see how
these teams market themselves to people in their idea fan base. The two teams I decided to look into were my favorite
football team, the New York Giants, and one of my favorite soccer/futbol teams,
FC Barcelona.
Lets begin with the New York
Giants. They are a team that really does
represent the majority of New York because realistically they are the best team
in New York, so I would say they have to market to a much bigger range of
people. But I looked into an interview
with the Chief Marketing Officer of the Giants, Mike Stevens, to see what he
was looking to do to grab the attention of their fan base and others around the
country. His main point of interest was
to get the fans more involved with the team as a whole. They wanted to gain more support through
social media, so he thought it would be a good idea to update the fans and much
as possible with the teams day to day events.
He started this idea by building their own HD studio to cross promote
their social medias and digital channels.
They also have been trying to connect more with the fans and began
focusing more on the view of the tickets they were selling to appeal more to
the fans. Even recently through social media app, Snapchat, they have been
posting more and more daily practice snapchats to let the fan see what is going
on during practice and lets them connect more with the team as a whole.
When looking into the FC Barcelona
marketing techniques I expected to be very similar to the New York Giants
techniques. But they were mainly focused
on the view of the team and the skills of the overall team to gain the view of
fans around the world. Barcelona wants
to soccer to be played skillfully and in an artistic fashion instead of just
pure brute strength. They also saw it as
an advantage to have people who fans saw as the face of the sports. So players like Lionel Messi, and Neymar were
perfect examples of what Barcelona was looking for because Messi and Neymar are
household names in the soccer industry to being able to connect those to with
the team really increases the viewership of the games and social media
accounts.
It was very interesting to see how
each differed in their marketing techniques.
I tried not to include that many similarities because there were so many
I wanted to focus on more of what each individual teams focal point was. It is very interesting to see how two entirely
different sports differed in how they marketed themselves around the social
media world.
